Bekantan

Proboscis Monkey is a unique animal of South Kalimantan in the usual language of communication is the Banjar society "warik Dutch". Proboscis Monkey in Banjarmasin itself is in Kembang island.

Proboscis Monkey or the scientific name Nasalis larvatus is a kind of long-nosed monkey with reddish-brown hair and is one of the two species in a single genus of apes Nasalis.

The main characteristics that distinguish the proboscis monkey from the other apes is a long nose and large species are found only in males. The function of the large nose on a male proboscis monkey is still not clear, but this may be caused by natural selection. Ape females prefer males with a big nose as his running mate. Because of this nose, proboscis monkey monkey is also known as Dutch. In the language of Brunei (kxd) called bangkatan.

Proboscis Monkey males larger than females. Can reach 75cm in size with a weight reached 24kg. Measuring 60cm female monkeys weighing 12kg. This species also has a large belly, as a result of food consumption habits. In addition to fruits and seeds, proboscis monkey eating a variety of leaves, which produce more gas during digestion. This resulted in side effects that make a proboscis monkey stomach bulge.

Spread and the endemic proboscis monkey in mangrove forest, swamp and coastal forests on the island of Borneo. These species spend some time in the tree and live in groups numbering between 10 to 32 monkeys. Proboscis Monkey can also swim very well, sometimes seen swimming from one island to another.

Proboscis Monkey is the mascot of the fauna of South Kalimantan province.

Based on the loss of forest habitat and illegal arrests of continuing, and very limited habitat area and population, proboscis monkey evaluated as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The species is listed in CITES Appendix I.
